The letters were tied together into one document with a cover titled "Original Manuscript from which letters were printed." In the letters, Porter defends his actions during the Battle of Bull Run in the Civil War from their attacks on his loyalty in "History, the life of Abraham Lincoln." He goes on to provide articles and evidence to his actions, including that Congress has passed bills that virtually reversed his court martial and restored him to the army. The second letter calls for them to be swift in correcting their errors.
