It extrapolates upon the enduring reference to 'the fort,' which referred to Ebenezer Eastman's garrison or a fort constructed by early settlers of Londonderry. It follows the families that lived there, many of whom were Eastman descendants. It also describes changes of business ownership, the arrival of a resident physician, and the financial calamity in 1837. An index of names precedes the chapter.
