Description:
Chapter 9 details the conflict between residents of Rumford and the provincial government in New Hampshire. It follows the Bow controversy and describes attempts to undermine the possession of homesteads and property by Rumford residents due to the conflicting legal authority. The chapter mentions several measures taken by the New Hampshire general court, including a tax inventory in 1761, to take advantage of land previously granted and cultivated by proprietors of the Pennycook Plantation. It also describes Rev. Timothy Walker's numerous appeals to the English court. An index of names precedes the chapter.
