Benjamin Brooks Ockington (1831-1909) was born in Randolph, N.H., before his father Benjamin Bird Ockington (1804-1875) moved the family to Stratford in 1832. There Benjamin Bird built a sawmill and a gristmill in Stratford Hollow, which, according to the town history, "for nearly fifty years furnished the principal industry in the lower part of town" (p. 428). His son rebuilt the mills in 1859 and continued to operate them with his brother Andrew. Benjamin Brooks Ockington married Rhoda Ann Wright (1842-1893) of Stoddard in 1862 and the couple had four children over the next twelve years: Gertrude Foster (b. 1863), Ellsworth Wright (b. 1865), Josephine Louise (b. 1870), and Charles Whitney (b. 1875). Benjamin Brooks was also postmaster in Stratford Hollow from 1861 to 1874.
