Marie Elizabeth Selinger was born in Brooklyn, New York, on March 23, 1891 to Elizabeth Gans Belle Selinger (1857-1899) and Edward A. Selinger (1857-1898). After her parents' deaths, she moved to Boston, and eventually lived with her father's younger brother, artist Jean Paul Selinger (1850-1909) and his wife, artist Emily McGary Selinger (1848-1927). Jean Paul was a painter of landscapes and portraits, while Emily was a painter, author, and poet. The pair had married in 1882, and by 1888 began spending summers in the White Mountains. In the early 1890s they had a studio at the Glen House before taking over Frank Shapleigh's former studio at the Crawford House in 1894. The couple painted there through the summer of 1909. After Jean Paul's death from cancer in Boston in September of that year, Emily began bringing their niece, Marie, to the Crawford House by 1910. In the 1911 season Marie served as the librarian for the newly-established Selinger Memorial Library at the Crawford House, for which friends of the Selingers donated books for the enjoyment of hotel guests.

Marie married real estate broker Charles J. Warren in Boston on February 19, 1914. The couple were living in Quincy, Massachusetts, in the 1920 US Census, but then moved to Charles's hometown of Peterborough, New Hampshire, in the late 1920s. The portrait stayed in the family passing to Marie's daughter, Elizabeth Selinger Warren Field (1915-1998) in 1978. Elizabeth then bequeated it to her cousin and adopted sister, Eleanor Anne Marchak (1925-2019), who gave it to her son, Michael Joseph Marchak III (b. Concord, NH,1957).
