In 1786, Phineas Ferren joined the Shakers and moved his family to Enfield, NH; Dorcas' sisters, Hannah (1770-1793) and Esther Ferrin (1773-1845), joined the Shaker Community in 1793, and their mother Mary (1743-1827) joined ten years after the death of her husband, c. 1822.

A letter in the accession folder from Mary L. Hill from Enfield states that Dorcas' mother was the first woman in Enfield to get a divorce. The "Shaker Records" states that Mary and her daughters lived outside the Shaker Community, and when Hannah and Ester wanted to join thier mother and neighbors tried dissuade them.
