A. W. Coysh R.K. Henrywood (1982), The Dictionary of Blue White Printed Pottery, 1780-1880, Vol. 1, p.302: "John Richard Riley, flourish dates c. 1802-1828. Nile Street (c.1802-14) and Hill Works (1814-28), Burslem, Staffordshire. The Rileys produced some good quality printed wares, mostly dinner services decorated with single patterns, typical of which are the Eastern Street Scene, Scene after Claude Lorraine, Europa, and Girl Musician patterns. These were not titled. It appears that they only produced one series of titled views with the scenes printed within a striking border of large leaf-like scrolls and flowers. All the blue-printed wares appear to have printed marks which include the name Riley, although it is clear that not all examples are marked. The three most common marks are...: an oval garter inscribed 'RILEY'S Semi China,' a flower spray and ribbon inscribed 'RILEY,' and a scroll cartouche with 'OPAQUE CHINA' and 'RILEY' which is less commonly found. The Large Scroll Border Series has its own printed cartouche of a ribbon wrapped around a sprig of leaves, once again with the name 'RILEY' and the addition of the name of the individual view.
