Notes:
Samuel died at 89. His wife, parents, and children all died ahead of him, leaving only a daughter-in-law, Caroline P. G. Pendexter, widow of his son Charles Carroll, to care for him directly. He did not like her. Lydia S. Pendexter, daughter of Samuel's son, Silas M., was fond of him and he of her. According to Gordon Tasker Heard, it was Lydia who rescued the settle from becoming kindling wood for Caroline. As a result Samuel passed the settle down to Lydia, who passed it down to GTH.
