- John Frederick Amelung emigrated from Bremen, Germany, accompanied by a number of craftsmen and their families. The New Bremen Glass Manufactory, established near modern-day Urbana about 1784 produced many types of products - window glass, case bottles, sugar bowls, and more.
Amelung's glass-making dream was shattered by a fire at the factory and his failuire to obtain adequate tarriff protection from the federal government. He soon died, bankrupt. It is believed that some of his laboreres moved to Fort Pitt, Pittsburg, PA factory.
