Description:
Nearly a century ago in the depths of the Great Depression, thousands of young men from many different backgrounds headed off for hard physical labor in New Hampshire's backcountry. For nine years successive teams of as many as 200 men in each Civilian Conservation Corps camp, tackled a wide variety of projects in the woods, around lakes and rivers. They were part of a "Forest Army" set up by a new President's imaginative plan to put a young generation to work outdoors across the country. The sites where they worked in New Hampshire are still enjoyed by residents and visitors, leaving a lasting legacy for this memorable generation. This book looks back at some of the surprising challenges and accomplishments of the CCC in the Granite State.
