- This facsimilie of Robert Frost's first published book was printed in 1966 for the Clifton Waller Barrett Library for presentation to members of the Poetry society of Virginia who attended the meeting at the University of Virginia on April 16, 1966. It was printed in a numbered edition of 170 copies of which this is copy number 140. Robert Frost had Twilight published privately, it is thought by the American Printing House in Lawrence, MA. Two copies were printed with the intention of impressing Elinor White, later Mrs. Frost. Robert Frost had sold his first poem , My Butterfly, and hoped that he could convince Elinor to marry him, as his financial prospects were now improved. The book includes five poems, very personal to the couple, memorializing their shared experiences. The poems are: My Butterfly, An Unhistoric Spot, The Falls, Summering and Twilight. He journeyed to St. Lawrence University, where she was a student to suprise her. When the suprise was a spectacular failure he destroyed his copy and left in despair. He then immediately undertook a trip to Norfolk, VA and attempted to lose himself in the Dismal Swamp. These attempts failed and he had several adventures reccounted in part in his 1956 Christmas peom Kitty Hawk 1894. He returned home to eventually win her as his wife. The other copy survived and is now in the Clifton Waller Barret Library collection of the works of Robert Frost at the University of Virginia.
