Description:
As tourists began flocking to the White Mountains in the 19th century, artists followed to produce mementos. The Gate of the Notch, a narrow defile at the head of the Saco River, was particularly popular. It was first depicted before 1816. The most famous verions are Thomas Cole's 1839 painting and William H. Bartlett's often-copied sketches. Accurate and detailed, the mid-19th-century artists were also romantic in their desire to extoll American's grandeur.
