Description:
Joseph Dennie (1768-1812), was one of America's "first professional men of letters, an essayist of note, an arbiter of literary taste, and an editor of accomplishment". He believed a recognized national literature was crucial to a national self-image, and therefore promoted American authors vigorously. This article reproduces Dennie's prefaces to several of Smith's biographical sketches, which appeared in the Farmer's Museum, 1796-1799, published in Walpole, New Hampshire.
