Description:
Franklin Leavitt (1824-1890), White Mountain guide and farmer, supplemented his income with map-making and poetry. Leavitt was untrained in cartography and his maps were unmeasured and inconsistently oriented. His maps were of little use for navigation and traveling, but made a distinctive souvenir of the mountains for tourists. Although largely devoid of literary merit, his poetry contains a considerable amount of useful information when studying the evolution of the White Mountains as a tourist region.
