- Description:
- The 600-man force the British sent to Bennington, Vermont seeking supplies in August 1777 was accompanied by many loyalists. They included Lieutenant Colonel John Peters of Bradford, Vermont, and Major Philip Skene, a wealthy New York landowner. In numerous instances the battle pitted townspeople and neighbors against each other. In some cases former friends faced each other. The patriot victory revealed how weak loyalist support was in the area.
