Description:
Connected buildings are a distinct American development of the mid-19th century. The author assesses 150 southwestern Maine building groups, compiling detailed documentation on 55. The custom of connected buildings resulted from a tradition of reusing older buildings, combined with the ideal of geometric formality and visual order. Modern farming methods in other parts of the country resulted in different building patterns, but the northern New England environment discouraged the introduction of modern farming methods.
