Description:
This article tracks the evolution of the development of The New Hampshire Historical society in it's first 100 years (1823-1923). The founding members recognized a growing interest in collecting and writing history and wished to follow the trend of other states developing historical societies to nurture this interest and preserve materials of historic value. The Society steadily grew in membership and collections over the first hundered years, eventually requiring a move from volunteer staff to paid staff, designing and construction of buildings to house and protect the collections, and development of collection policies, best practices, and committees.
