Description:
Eight days before his arrest at Dayton, Ohio in May 1863, and his subsequent exile, Clement L. Vallandigham wrote to John H George of Concord, New Hampshire. The letter is significant because only 50 other Vallandigham letters still exist, and because 'it suggests a possible inter-regional correspondence between Peace Democrats in the Northeast and Midwest'. Vallandigham also revealed his optimism over the electoral sucesses in Ohio, which he hoped would be a step toward the ouster of Lincoln from the Presidency in 1864.
