- Description:
- Fort Constitution, is one of the few surviving pre-1816 American Seacoast forts. The first system at Portsmouth, built in the 1790's, consisted of timber and earth defenses. It survived, with occasional repair, until 1806. The second system begun then, included perpendicular masonry walls, with two and even three tiers of casemates. A cooperating battery was added in 1808 and a Martello Tower in 1814. They suffered neglect after the war.
