- Samuel Sweat (1744-1792) left one of the few surviving diaries of an 18th-century American craftsman. It reveals that unlike joiners in cities, who made doors and windows, installed paneling, and did interior woodwork; joiners such as Sweat also framed houses and made furniture. His diary describes his work and lifestyle while on a two-month trip to Maine, and his daily routine in Kingston, New Hampshire, afterward. It concludes with a vivid account of treatment by Kingson Sons of Liberty of a peddler selling British tea.
