Description:
Analyzes the 1765 membership of the Portsmouth Marine Society to explore the socioeconomic structures of colonial Portsmouth's maritime community. All the members who signed a 1765 petition were shipowners and/or shipmasters. Generally, those who became owners and managers had the advantage of education and/or apprenticeship. But beyond their common participation in maritime commerce and their joint non-participation in local government, the memebers of the Marine Society were a rather diverse social and economic collection of individuals. Their ages were mixed, they attended several different churches, and they did not all live in any one section of Portsmouth.
