- Description:
- Polish and Russian immigrants came to Claremont, NH around 1907 in about the same numbers. By 1918, more than 21 percent of all children in Claremont were born to Russian Orthodox parents. Yet the Russians were always less visible than the Polish. Popular association of Russians with Bolshevism made assimilation difficult, and promoted mobility while war and revolution at home preculded a return to Russia. Internal religious differences may have contributed to residential dispersion, and a disintegration of ethnic identity, while some Russians may have sacrificed ethnic solidarity to ease tension.
