Horace Fabyan (1807-81) accumulated capital in the Portland provisions trade, and then became a hotel keeper. In 1837 he entered the White Mountain hotel trade, and prospered in the 1840's as Portland extended its economic influence over the area with the construction of the Grand Trunk Railway's Montreal-Portland line. In the 1850's Fabyan suffered reverses from a fire and legal disputes. By 1861 he had left New Hampshire and settled in Bradford, Vermont, where he died. Deified as "the pioneer good landlord," Fabyan also symbolized the commercialization of the hotel trade.
