Description:
The 1859 journal of Benjamin Gerrish, Jr., of Dover, New Hampshire, provides a record of social and political events and attitudes in New Hampshire on the eve of the American Civil War. Gerrish disdainfully but vividly describes Democratic Party rallies and their Irish immigrant participants while recording Republican activities enthusiastically but respectfully. He also comments on church services, demonstrations by traveling salesmen, such popular activities as concerts and lyceums, and gatherings in his store.
