- Description:
- In 1941 John Gilbert Winant replaced Joseph Kennedy as American ambassador to Great Britain. Many contemporaries saw him as shy and inarticulate, but he became 'a lasting figure in Anglo- American history', and 'a symbol of American steadfastness and good sense.' His success derived largely from personal qualities of modesty and sincerity. Winnant displayed a 'constant and obvious' sympathy for the British people.
