- Description:
- On Friday January 2, 1920 United States Justice Department agents with the aid of local police made 260 arrests of suspected anarchists and political radicals in eight cities and towns in New Hampshire. These arrests were largely of immigrants form southern and eastern Europe and were a part of a nationwide dragnet later dubbed" The Palmer Raids". Fear of a communist revolution spreading to the U.S. from eastern Europe prompted the raids. The necessity, legality, and the constitutionality of these raids were widely called in to question and critized. The author examines the effects of these raids on a local and national level.
