Description:
John Cumings (1829-1911) had joined the Shaker community at Enfield, New Hampshire, with his family in 1844. His father and brother left the Shakers in the 1860's. Although sorely tempted to join them, John finally decided in the 1870's to stay with the Shakers, who came to rely on his mechanical skills. He held the Enfield community together until his death in 1911. In 1923 the surviving Enfield Shakers moved to Canterbury.
