Description:
This second volume of the Letters of Henry Elijah Parker includes all of the letters and documents relating to Parker's service as Chaplain of the Second New Hampshire Volunteer Regiment during the Civil War. Included are letters, poems, sermons, military orders, and never before published first hand accounts of Civil War battles. These documents provide not only eye-witness descriptions of events during the first 14 months of the war, but also the personal reactions, feelings and emotions associated with those events. Parker's regiment was part of the Army of the Potomac. He saw action at the first battle of Bull Run in July of 1861, and susequently in the Peninsular Campaign of 1862. These letters provide insight into the duties and daily activities of a Civil War chaplain, as well as providing a glimpse into the ups and downs of military life. There were times when his frustration and grief at the turn of events were the dominant theme of his letters. But he never gave up hope in what he considered to be a successful and positive outcome of the war. His love of country and his faith in God never wavered. And through the entire experience he conducted himself with bravery, honor and distinction.
