Description:
A philosophical anarchist and a practical Whig-Republican, Ralph Waldo Emerson especially admired Daniel Webster until 1850 when he became a freesoiler. A disunionist by 1856, Emerson was not far from the Federalist-Whig tradition expressed during the two previous wars. Emerson's deep concern for politics is traced during 1822-56, with quotations from published letters and journals.
