Description:
This is the third and final book in the series of the letters of Henry Elijah Parker. It begins with a group of letters he wrote from Europe during a six month visit in 1865-1866, His descriptions of the places he visited are rich in detail and bear witness to his extensive knowledge of European history and literature. Upon his return from Europe he took up a position at Dartmouth College teaching Latin language and literature. Documents from the time indicate that he was one of Dartmouth's most beloved and respected professors. In 1887 he left again for Europe and travelled extensively for over a year visiting much of Western Europe. The journey was extended to include a trip down the Nile, as well as travels through Palestine, Syria, Cyprus, Turkey, and Greece. The journals and manuscripts from these travels are reporduced with all the 19th century texture and detail. Several other writings of Parker's have been included which represent special interests: The History of Dartmouth, The Makers of New Hampshire History, Ovid's Metamorphosis, Lectures on Vergil, A Description of Venice and the Christmas Holidays at Rome. Finally, many of the tributes written after his death in 1896 are here reporduced. They, along with his own writings, bear testimony to a life well lived.
