- Description:
- Henry Elijah Parker was born in 1821 in Keene, New Hampshire. He attended Dartmouth College and later Union Theological Seminary in New York. For fifteen years he was the pastor of the South Congregational Church in Concord, N.H.. He served as a chaplain in the Civil War with the Second N.H. Volunteer Regiment. After the war he accepted an appointment to teach Latin at Dartmouth where he remained until his retirement in 1891. This book is the first of a three-volume set of his letters and documents. The first volume includes all the pre-Civil War letters, plus a few that were written later but which logically fit with this period. In this volume we lear about the relationship of the Parker family with two Cherokee girls who came to live with them in New Hampshire during the period of the forced removal of Native Americans from their lands in the Southeastern United States to the Oklahoma territory. We also gain insight into the relationship of Henry Parker to Franklin Pierce, a member of Parker's congregation in Concord, who became the 14th president of the United States. Another focus of many of the letters in this volume deals with Parker's courtship and marriage to Mary Elizabeth Huntley, a widow with two young children. These letters document the early life of a remarkable 19th century scholar, pastor, and gentleman.
