- Description:
- Reproduces John Wentworth's report for the Marquis of Rockingham on American discontent with Grenville's Stamp Act (1765). Wentworth reviewed the economy of each province, from Canada and Nova Scotia to Florida and the Islands, devoting as much space to New England as to all the rest. He argued that the benefits to Britain from fromexpanding trade, extractive industry, and population would vastly exceed revenues form oppressive stamp and molasses taxes, which stimulated smuggling and competitive colonial manufactures. He criticized high customs rates and favored indirect trade. The influence of this report cannot be proven, but it agreed with Rockingham's imperial policy as expressed in the repeal of the Stamp Act and the reduction of the molasses duty.
