- Description:
- Gilbert was "the first well trained lawyer to settle in Hanover." He was a leader in Dartmouth College's dispute with President Wheelock, a Federalist until 1817, a member of Governor Smith's Council in 1809, and a pillar of the church and community. Born on a farm in North Brookfield, Massachusetts, he was orphaned early and was the only one of six children to attend college. He taught for two years at Fredericton, New Brunswick. He read law and then moved to Hanover, where he married Sally Shepard of Boston in 1797. After 1815, Gilbert managed a third of an $86,000 Virginia estate inherited by his wife. In 1824 he moved to Boston. Based mostly on family papers in Dartmouth College Archives
