- Description:
- The work of Stephen Webster (1717-1798), of Massachusetts and New Hampshire, is sometimes confused with that of his brother Abel (1726-1801). There are similarities in their work, but a few general preferences help to distinguish each. Among other things, "Stephen's gravestones displayed a greater chasteness and discipline of design than did Abel's; Abel sometimes showed a 'horror vacui' that led him to fill every empty space with some ornamental device." The most important differences are in spirit symbols. The faces on Stephen's stones almost always frowned, while Abel's almost always, smiled.
