- Description:
- Relates the business of the local school districts, including that of the agents who administered school affairs, that of the Prudential Committee, and the Superintending School Committee, in the 19th century. Schooling was sporadic due to the harvest, epidemics, and disruptions by "mutinous pupils and incompetent teachers." Summer sessions lasted from six to eight weeks, winter sessions eight weeks unless interrupted by illness or weather. When one schoolmaster split open a pupil's skull, the victim's older brother hurled the teacher through a window. This matter started a dispute between the Superintending and Prudential committies, resulting in the resignation of the latter.
