- Description:
- Two nearly eight by five-foot full-length paintings of the 1741-67 governor and his father, valued at 70 thousand dollars, have been presented by descendants to the New Hampshire Historical Society. The artist came from England via Bermuda and Boston to Portsmouth in 1760, painting nearly one hundred Americans, including Jeffery Amherst, Lady Pepperell, James Otis, and four Wentworths. John's portrait is copied from a bust painted about 1700. In 1950 Benning's was thought to be lost. Both portraits are described and reproduced.
