- Description:
- In 1773 the Roberts family sold its farm for 6,365 pounds and moved to what became Alton at the south end of Lake Winnepesaukee. When New Durham Gore (as it was then called) was organized into a town in 1777, Joseph Roberts was first selectman. The teenager's diary (in the Society library) reflects the first two years' settlement: raisings, clearing and burning, frolicks, bears and livestock, household industry, and trips to Dover. Also, there is brief reference to two tours of military duty. See 1953.002 (m) for diary.
