- Description:
- When attacked by a petition submitted to the Assembly of 1848, Shakers of Enfield and Canterbury "Families" retained Pierce, with Ira Perley of Concord and Josiah Quincy of Rumney. Defendants answered apostate Shakers and other enemy witnesses in three weeks' testimony before the House Judiciary Committee. Pierce's closing argument to a packed House, partly recorded by a Shaker reporter, is summarized. John Sullivan Wells of Exeter, counsel for the petitioners, replied for three hours. An anti-Shaker bill passed the House, 176-39, but failed in the Senate. Defense against the bill cost the Shakers 804 dollars of which about 500 dollars was reimbursed by the State.
