- Description:
- Edward Parry came to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in 1771 as mast agent for the British Navy. In the spring of 1775 he was arrested as a Tory in Georgetown, Maine, and his land and logs all were confiscated eventually. He had joined the "Tory Associators of Portsmouth" in January 1775 and had connections with Tory tea consignees and counterfeiters. Assigned to live with Captain Timothy Parker of Sturbridge (25 August 1775 to 13 July 1776), he was paroled back to Portsmouth, shipped in January 1777 to Halifax in exchange for John Langdon's sister. He reached England on 23 August 1777. Selections from his 1775-77 journal show patriot opinion, family customs, and some of his Loyalist associations.
