- Description:
- Webster inspected midwestern lands in 1836 and began speculative buying. With economic depression and larger personal debts after 1837 he unloaded some land for depreciated currency. At the same time he bought Missouri-Arkansas river land, aided by a loan of 10 thousand dollars from Pierre Chouteau of the American Fur Company, repaid by 1840. Two of his land agents borrowed 10 thousand dollars and never repaid it. They were also careless about the quality of titles to land they bought for him. In 1839-40 he apparently relieved his finances by a sales trip to England. In 1842 he claimed to hold 250 thousand acres in Tennessee, and in 1845 he bought heavily in Mississippi. His total investment exceeded 100 thousand dollars but no known records tell whether he or his heirs realized any increment.
