- Description:
- The article discusses the history of the Ledyard Bridge over the Connecticut River that links Hanover, New Hampshire and Norwich, Vermont. It examines the bridge's original construction in 1796 under the White River Falls Bridge Company and its Proprietors, including lawyer Aaron Hutchinson and merchant Rufus Graves. The author explores opposition to the bridge from Hanover residents, especially from a doctor named Joseph Lewis who ran a ferry across the river. The bridge collapsed in 1804 and burned, possibly due to arson, in 1854 following a dispute about tolls. It was rebuilt as a covered bridge, which was torn down and rebuilt in 1934. Negotiations with Dartmouth College are also discussed.
