Description:
Lewis Downing opened a Concord wheelwright shop in 1813; added J. Stephen Abbot as partner, 1826. They soon perfected the Concord coach's round-bottomed, flat-topped, thorough-brace cradled design and built three thousand in the 19th century. With their sons they ran competing shops, 1847-65, but the sons merged, custom building with high handicraft standards. After receivership (1901-11) and a bankruptcy sale, the successor company made a belated, partial adjustment to the motor age. Sustained only by "civic pride as a source of funds" it failed to develop the necessary large-scale plant, technical staff, and sales organization. Illustrated with 24 prints from glass negatives in the New Hampshire Historical Society, mostly late 19th century.
