- Description:
- Travel Journal kept by John Hardy Steele, a Peterborough cotton manufacturer who later became governor of New Hampshrie. Steele traveled from Peterborough, N.H. to Salisbury, N.C. in 1838. Steele did not restrict himself to describing the places he had visited. His journal is in part a chronicle of his adventures but it also serves as a medium through which he gives vent to his own views and opinions. In the course of it, Steele shows that he was a man of strong convictions; so strong in fact that his account of the journey takes on the qualitites of a statement of political faith.
