Description:
The regimental historian used little of this narrative in his final account, 'The Third New Hampshire' (1893). Written from memory soon after his discharge in 1865, the first 60 pages, printed here, give the flavor, feelings, and pastimes of the soldier 'not' in battle: pp. 6-11 on enlistment and stay in New Hampshire, 2 August-3 September 1861; pp. 12-19 on duty in Washington and Annapolis; pp. 20-49 on a hurricane at sea and on Hilton Head and other sea islands to June 1862. Eldredge showed himself a Yankee trader of clerical bent.
