- Description:
- When Christian Science emerged as a successful new religious movement in the late nineteenth century, garnering hundreds of thousands of new believers for its faith based on Jesus's practice as a healer, it was not with out controversy. One of the spirited discussions which appeared at the time and has persisted even to this day was the charge that Mary Baker Eddy, its founder and leader, had derived the language and ideological framework for the faith from an early mental healer, Phineas P. Quimby. This book challenges that assumption with meticulous scholarship and even provides the first serious biographical treatment of Quimby.
