Description:
In March 1919, even before Congress passed and sent the Nineteenth Amendment to the states for ratification, Carrie Chapman Catt, president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA), began to look beyond the passage of the amendment. As she addressed the NAWSA convention, Catt made clear that suffragists' work would not be done even after the amendment had been ratified. " I propose a League of Women Voters," she declared,"nonpartisan and non-sectarian, to finish the fight...What should be done, can be done; what can be done, let us do."
