- Description:
- Ricker was a significant legal and political actor in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She repeatedly tested the limits of what was deemed acceptable female behavior at the time by trying to vote on an annual basis in her hometown of Dover and challenging the constraints on women seeking to enter the professions. Toward the end of her life she ran for governor of New Hampshire, even though she was not yet allowed to vote. Ricker's dogged insistence on equal treatment for women made her a well-known Granite State suffragist and a symbol of the women's movement in New Hampshire and beyond.
