Description:
This article discusses the life and work of Franklin Pierce, who was the 14th president of the United States. Pierce was a northern Democrat who saw the abolitionist movement as a fundamental threat to the U.S. He alienated anti-slavery groups by championing and signing the Kansas-Nebraska Act, yet he failed to stem conflict between North and South, setting the stage for Southern secession and the American Civil War. Pierce's legacy in New Hampshire has been mixed, with some considering him a traitor to Northern values and others believing that he did the best he could in a diffiicult time for the country admist personal tragedy, including the death of all three of his sons at young ages, the third just before he assumed office. In 1914, after decades of consideration, a statue of Pierce was erected in his memory on the Concord, New Hampshire state house grounds. It is the furtherst statue from the state house, facing directly onto Concord's Main Street.
