Description:
The article focuses on technological improvements to and maintenance of the New Hampshire State House, both before, during, and after renovation in the early twentieth century. Another renovation and expansion of the state house occured in 1909-1910, by the Boston firm Peabody and Stearns. The article mentions that during the Progressive era, the government increased its oversight to an unprecedented degree, on everything from labor conditions to food safety. This meant that government departments grew dramatically, and the state house continually needed more room. It also mentions that planners aspired to create civic centers that would embody a refined classicism. For example, a separate building to the west of the state house constructed for the state library exemplified the Beaux Arts design principles of the early twentieth century.
