- Description:
- Enoch George Adams (1829-1900), member of the distinguished Adams family of Adams Point, Durham, became a hero because of wounds received at the Battle of Williamsburg, 1862. He was left with a bullet lodged in his head. His efforts to exploit his injuries, recorded in letters reproduced here, suggest that he had delusions of grandeur. His speaking engagements did not enrich him, but he did eventually receive a promotion after his return to active service, and went on to serve in the West. He was mustered out at Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1865.
